I get the feeling that

1. The so-called "geeky" fandoms (animé, tabletop games, role-playing, sci-fi, etc.) generally don't like politics. They seem to generally view politics cynically.

2. Political activists, on the other hand, at least don't seem to display their "geeky" interests if they have any. Perhaps it's because of a focus on making things look mainstream. (Maybe if we had an oligo-party system...?)

The one possible intersection is between strong environmental (and sometimes human rights) activism and some fandoms.

I once thought that these fandoms were mostly on the liberal side of things. Turns out that they're somewhat spread out between liberals, moderates, libertarians, and don't cares, with a few conservatives thrown into the mix. However, the conservatives in said mix tend not to be the flame-baiting book-thumping types, not surprisingly; on the other hand sometimes they mix in with the libertarians.

The animé/otaku/JRPG/Japanophile fandoms seem to be more liberal on average than the TRPG/role-playing fandoms.
