Shadows

"Awaken your soul."

The child looked up from her toys, blue eyes unblinking. The man looking down at her was quite beautiful, but the child did not have any concept of beauty... Yet. She did not seem frightened nor amazed, merely curious.

He stared into her blue eyes, as though searching for something. She stared back, unafraid and curious as to what he wanted. The penetrating eyes were mesmerising, and it was a short while before he blinked and she followed suit. It was a slightly silly moment, and he reached down to ruffle her head.

A lumiscent figure jumped out of the child's shadow and stood in front of him, hands outstretched to prevent him from laying a finger on the child. The blond woman looked like an older version of the child, but nothing could change the fact that she looked stern and protective over the child.

"You're awake."

The woman did not reply. She glared at the man, her gaze almost childlike in their determination. The child gurguled and clapped her hands to see the woman; it was obvious that she liked the woman and had missed her.

"You've broken the rules, child. You shouldn't have left your post." His voice was triumphant.

The woman tilted her head upwards, as though snubbing him. She seemed far too confident for someone who had abandoned her post, and that made the man wary. He turned away from her, disappearing as he walked. The child cooed when the woman turned and smiled at her before she disappeared herself. Going back to her toys, the blond little girl rubbed her eyes.

Her mother came in, not knowing nor noticing anything out of the ordinary. The child was happy to see her, and when her mother held her, she fell asleep almost immediately, feeling safe.
