... Reminiscence
A man for the ages has passed. Vladimir Bukovsky was born in a land and time of tyranny. It
not only troubled him until his last breath, it compelled him to change it, not just for himself, but
for others in places far away, that he would never meet. He felt that it was truly wrong for the
stability and strength of a country to, depend on the fear it imposes on its citizens. This, he
thought was the ultimate evidence of the regime's insecurity. I feel he should not have passed
with so few knowing what he accomplished and how it changed history. So please indulge in a
few words.
For him to accept tyranny was not possible; the battle lines were drawn, a man of principle
against a thugocracy that had none. The regime came to the battle, with a multitude of warriors
and weapons beyond count. Vladimir came the battle with no weapons of war, only the belief
that the rights of man can never be taken by the state. For his trouble, he spent a dozen years in
the Gulags, while there were those of us who petitioned our government to pressure the Soviet
regime for his release. In the end, he was exchanged for Chilean Communist Luis Corvalan as
though there was any moral equivalence between the two; a final insult....
