2011 was one for the books in a million ways.
Lots of occasions that I hope to always hold on to. My best friend getting married. My sister graduating from college, and getting to spend the 2nd half of this year with her. Watching my niece grow over her first year. Meeting a bunch of wonderful people and spending time with those whom I'm lucky enough to have had in my life previously. The Movielife. Descendents. Kid Dynamite. Latterman. Fest 10. A few false starts, job dissatisfaction, and one totaled car, but overall having ridiculous times with ridiculous people. None of which I would trade for anything.
Before I had turned 23, I decided it was going to be a good year. Last year completely exceeded any expectations I could have thought up. I couldn't be more grateful for all the people who were by my side every step of the way.
I think 2012 is going to be huge. There are a lot of big changes in the works. It's not necessarily going to be an easy road, but I know that it'll work out. I'm not exactly where I want to be, but I'm not that far off.
A little late, but here's my obligatory top 10 albums for 2011.
10. Great Cynics - Don't Need Much
9. Spraynard - Funtitled
8. Banner Pilot - Heart Beats Pacific
7. Bayside - Killing Time
6. Old Man Markley - Guts N' Teeth
5. Ellwood - Transitions
4. Cobra Skulls - Agitations
3. Bomb the Music Industry! - Vacation
2. Chuck Ragan - Covering Ground
1. I Am the Avalanche - Avalanche United
After a six year wait, Avalanche United is exactly what I wanted it to be. While initially bummed that by the time the album came out, I knew six out of twelve tracks, I'm glad that 3 of 4 demos, as well as Drinking Song made it on this album.
There were a lot of good albums that came out last year, but not a lot of great albums. Here are some honorable mentions that are most certainly worth a listen:
Laura Stevenson and the Cans, Frank Turner, Red City Radio, Elway, Timeshares, Good Luck, House Boat, Andrew Jackson Jihad, and I listened to Damnesia way more times than I should admit to.
Very much excited to hear these this year: The Menzingers, The Sidekicks, fun., Cheap Girls, Hot Water Music, and Mixtapes.
I had a great time kicking off 2012. There's no reason for me not to think it'll keep up that momentum.
