Contrapelo is a spanish word which literally translates to against the grain.
In wordreference, it is defined as contrary to normal practice.
My dad had always used the word around me.
He used it in a different but still somewhat similar context.
I'd like to think of it as the concept between rock, paper, scissors.
Think of..
Rock as A.
Paper as B.
Scissors as C.
C beats B and B beats A but it doesn't necessarily mean that C beats A.
Logically however, it shouldn't make sense.
A theory in math will state that If C > B and B > A, then C > A.
Then again, math isn't everything.
There are always more factors and more variables to consider.
Early this morning on the fields of Alabang, we played disc yet again. Our team went against this other team called Monster.
Immediately before our game, I recognized two familiar faces. I recognized them because I've played with them before.
Now, however, I will be pitted against them. We were expecting to win because last week, we beat a team that clearly overpowered them. Sadly, we lost to Monster by a point.
Contrapelo.
Though we lost, I have absolutely no regrets. I know I played my game. I did my part and I surely showed you.
When we were teammates, you underestimated me. You didn't believe. You never did until today.
Today, I know I reached you. I got close to you. I scared you.
I don't have to prove myself anymore because I just did. You know I did.
We may have lost today but we'll get you back. Soon. After all, what's any sport without friendly competition?
