A couple of friends and I have gotten together to form a new A/R comm, about_time.   It will be a complement to the ever fabulous ar_drabbles  but with MOAR!  Anyway, go check it and join if you're interested.  There's an intro post with the whole dealeo.

And I'm way behind on my pimping of adams_versebsg_aussiegirl  and I are about to post chapter five of the newest story, Unforgettable ( Read more... )

the thread where bugs goes ranty, pimping

Doesn't adama_roslin already serve the same purpose?

Actually, no.

First off, the wonderful adama_roslin, where so many of us began our reading and posting, was created back before the relationship was canon; see the comm's own guidelines: "Be they friends, lovers, enemies or rivals..."

I think we'd all agree that they weren't enemies or rivals, so we're encouraging stories and graphics within the framework of the completed canon.

Second, there's been much bemoaning for the good old days of an active A/R comm. Yay for Clare following her dreams, but we wanted to create a comm where there can be active chatter going, encourages more writing, not allow plagiarism to remain posted, and to assure that the fics are what members are expecting.

We'll be following the framework that's proved to be successful in ar_drabbles and hope to see that sort of creative production.

We welcome all those who share these ideals, and anyone not cool with that is not required to join.

I guess I just feel like there are too many comms already. Perhaps that's the fault of mods who don't tend to their comms, or allow someone else with the passion to run them. We don't *have* to join, but as an active writer, I feel I should. Is that where my audience is going? Perhaps. And so I follow. And as you say, perhaps other writers will follow you and only post to About_Time, rather than Adama_Roslin. And if that happens, those who don't join are in fact missing out ( ... )

I totally agree. Fandom is such a wonderful, but small place. The last thing it needs is more fracturing and constraints on creativity.

Very true. I really appreciate everything you're saying here. You and I are definitely on the same page with ship-swap. I adore A/R, total OTP, and I can see them, in character, in a variety of situations and pairings (though not all). I love the challenge of finding spots in canon where stories will work.

I like the idea that characters can surprise us, and that surprise can include sexual preferences/partners/activities. But I get that is not what everyone wants to read, that mileage varies, etc

Yes, me too.

it's an interesting topic in terms of how we decide to write and to read these characters, how we define our limits, and what "canon" even means, in terms of characterization.

I'd love to have this discussion sometime! I think interpretations of canon and characters are as varied as writers are, and I think there's room for everyone.

It's always great to have a discussion about things. We often worry about offending someone by bringing up certain topics, but it doesn't mean people may be having issues anyway. Of course, this was simply a pimp post, and not intended as any sort of discussion, but here we are, eh?

I don't think that's treating them like blow-up dolls (though I'm not sure what that means exactly, or that it would be totally bad)Blow-up dolls is PWP-ish stuff generally, where for example, Laura has no wrinkles, pert glowing globes for breasts and is hot and ready for sex with all comers all the time. Or it can be an epic even, where the 'what if' comes from plot, not characterization. "What if Laura were a Cylon?" can work perfectly if her *characterization* remains the same. "What if Laura were having a secret sub/dom relationship with Billy?" is unsupported in canon, IMO, to say the frakkin' least. But perhaps that author (Let's hope she doesn't exist, but if she does, my apologizes for using you as an example) has a thing for sub/dom, young ( ... )

(Freak, responding to my own post)

As much as I'd like to see adama_roslin rise from the ashes, the reaction to change is sort of odd to me. (Particularly when I'm mocked for being such an old stick in the mud for my reading choices ( ... )
