“You want all or nothing, Bill.  But there’s no all in this universe, and I’m sure as hell not going to accept nothing,” said Laura.

Bill leaned forehead to forehead with her, trying to shake his head, make her agree with him.

Her tears slid down, the skin burning.

He said, “We should go,” releasing his grip on her.

She clawed at his frame, finding her balance, and pushed away.  She cleared her hair from her face and stepped out of the alcove.

“Yes, thank you, Admiral.”  The two shadows waited, backs turned, but listening, she was sure.

His hand slipped under her elbow.  “This way,” he said gently, herding her down another passage.

She sighed.  She would never know her way around this warren, and why should she?  Colonial One, light and white, one single corridor, that was her home.

Suppose she started leaving a crumb trail from the Life Station to the shuttle launch?  She remembered an old hiking trick.  Look behind you to memorize how the trail looked for your return.

First, there was a wall of black uniform and blank stare.  Then, it was just another Battlestar corridor, gray.  Adama tugged at her arm, and she said, tired, “Yes, yes.”  The worn seats of the Raptor sounded wonderful right now; she’d fall right to sleep.

They weren’t at the shuttle bay.  They were at a hatch door, reading Commander in faded white letters.

Laura blinked like an owl at him.

Bill spun the handle and said to her sentries, “Take a walk around the block for an hour.  I’ve got this.”  His hand on the closed hatch, he looked at her for final confirmation, his gaze still worried.

She nodded.  Covering his tense hand with her shaking one, they pushed the door open.

***The end***

End Notes: *wiping sweat from brow*  That was some work, but I hope you enjoyed the ride; it was a lot of fun to write and hit on all this first time viewer’s hot spots.  The wedding ring. What exactly happened that night?  What were those other times?  What happened after the fight?  Now I’ve got that out of my system, I’ll move on.
