After reading the school newspaper, The Tick decided to do something nice for his housemates.

That's why on the kitchen table there was a large cake reading:

A KEEN CAKE FOR
A KEEN COUPLE!

These kinds of gestures always made Tick feel good.

"Is it someone's birthday?" Thursday asked when she saw the cake. Then she stepped closer and had a look. "Anniversary then?"

"Hello, Thursday!" Tick said. "The school paper mentioned their coupling today and I wanted to make sure they knew that their lifestyle is accepted."

"That's very welcoming of you, Tick. How's the response so far?"

Tick whispered as quietly as he could - which wasn't very quietly, mind you - "I think Darth is confused about it being in the open. But the gesture seems to have moved him."

Thursday did her best to keep a straight face. "Give him time. Perhaps he's a little overwhelmed."

"It's understandable," Tick said. "I get the impression that he may not have expected it."

"I wouldn't think so. I doubt he gets many pleasant surprises."

"Which is why he gets a cake. What surprise can be more pleasant than cake?" Tick asked.

Thursday knew it was a rhetorical question, but decided to answer anyway. "Cake with jam?"

"Jam on a cake?" Tick asked. "Is that pleasant?"

Thursday nodded. "If it's sponge cake."

"Ah, that makes sense," Tick said. "This isn't sponge cake, though, so it might be best not to bring jam into it."

"Probably best," Thursday agreed.
