Humanity's greatest acheivement

The question of the week is, "what is Humanity's greatest achievement." I encourage everyone who is bored this week to consider the question. It was tossed around at lunch yesterday... with answers ranging from Microprocessors to Penicillin.

Choosing to eliminate fire and penicillin (they were probably accidental discoveries anyway!)... my sage choice becomes: The post-it note. I think that the "post it" is a most innovative achievement... think of all the things that you would not be able to do without it! Today I post my "ode to post-its"

1. It helps protect the environment. Without a post it I would have to find tape (which you can really only use once) to stick something to your door. Post it notes are, therefore, a boon to the environment because they save resources. It also encourages recycling... you can use one post it over, and over, and over again. Much use does diminish the "stickiness" but generally you can get a lot of use out of one post it. Truly this humble innovation has allowed for much conservation over the years!

2. It fights depression. The bright array for colors adds life to an otherwise dull manila colored office. Take my office for instance... everything is brown... various shades of beige and brown (except the phone... that is black). But by placing my brightly colored post its around I turn my lifeless office into a bastion of sunshine!

3. It improves communication. Think of the times that you might be tempted to leave something under a door... or slide it between the wall and the door. How many times has this failed! Too many. But with the post it note you can stick it to the door! Then, when the person comes back they will see your note and know that you were thinking of them!

4. It allows for information organization. My entire master's thesis was written on post its! No lie! Research is complex and you need to be able to track and rearrange ideas. I would endlessly reorganize my notes in manners that made more sense (see companion benefit #1 above). THis allowed me more flexibility and saved time.

5. If you are bored you can use them as toys. Perhaps the greatest argument for post it notes is their tremendous flexibility. You can stick several together to make chains. You can fold several into boxes to build houses. YOu can draw on several and create a flip book. THe uses are endless!

THus, while some of you might be tempted to consider the Saturn 5 rocket at innovative... I challenge you to consider the many uses of the underappriciated post it note. No office runs smoothly without them! THat is why I place post it notes as the most innovative invention created by humanity.
