I love my mother, but sometimes she buys me things (out of the goodness of her heart) that I have absolutely no use for. The following are real examples:
Mom: Here you are, Shelley, I bought you a book on making hand shadows. Merry Christmas!
Me: Wow... thanks... mom, that's... something else
or
Mom: When I was in Italy this beaded vest made me think of you (holds it up, waggle waggle)
Me: Thanks mom, that's a really interesting piece.
or
Mom: I wanted to get you a housewarming gift, and I thought this secondhand metal sculpture of a seahorse and starfish that might be a candle holder would be a nice centerpiece for the kitchen table that you need to move out of my basement.
Me: Thanks mom... there are... no words...
Today I was walking to Higher Ground on my break and this older gentleman started walking in stride with me and started a conversation, so that we looked to all the world like two friends who were walking to a coffee shop together. He pointed to a fancy car and said, "Man, with the hail storm a lot of those expensive cars got damaged. Windows broken, dents in the hood... it makes someone like me feel really good." "Hmm!" I replied, "That storm really did do a lot of damage." Then it turned out we were both walking to Higher Ground, so he stood behind me in line up. After I had ordered and handed over my money, he told me that I should simply exchange cupcakes for coffee, and that it would be "a good deal." What interesting people frequent that neighbourhood.
Finally, I wanted to share a brief story blurb from the book I'm reading, called The Way of Tea, but I seem to have left it at my house, so that's a no go. What an interesting day.
