Dad and I have done Mom's IV for the last two days. I think Mom doesn't want that substitute nurse around. She kept answering her phone with her gloves on, and not changing her gloves! (Cue Psycho music.)
The regular nurse, who is very well trained, went to TWU and has three different certifications/degrees. She is originally from Africa, and went back there for her vacation.
The instructions on the paper (that came with the IV antibiotics) said that we are supposed to wipe the 'injection point' of the IV catheter with an alcohol wipe for at least 15 seconds. Mom says that the hospital nurse said 20 seconds is better. Sub Nurse does this quick 3 second wipe thing.
Dad & I can also set up the IV faster than she does. We also didn't get bubbles in the tubing like she does.
She also has a bit of an attitude. When my mom and I tried to show her the instruction sheet that mentioned wiping time, she got defensive. I tried to give her new gloves because she answered the phone, and again, she was a bit defensive.
My mom asked her about the fact that there are two injection 'ports' on her arm. The nurse said that the red one was for blood.
My mom called the nurse at the hospital, B, and asked her some questions we had about the flow of the meds, when we stop the flow, and mom asked about the ports. Apparently we were supposed to have been using the red one, not the purple one! She said it was okay, and to just keep using the one we have been using. She also told us that the second port needed to be flushed with sodium chloride(sp?) and heperon(sp?) once a day.
Sub nurse didn't know about any of this.
Mom found out that sub nurse went to some small unaccredited nursing school in Arlington.
So mom has decided she doesn't want sub nurse coming around anymore.
So looking forward to mom's regular nurse getting back.
Which is why dad and I are the ones doing Mom's IV twice a day.
My dad needs a hearing aid... I told my dad that there was kitty litter in the back of the pickup.
Dad; "So, dog food and kitty litter."
Me; "No, no dog food."
Dad; "Just dog food?"
Me; "KITTY. LITTER."
Sigh...
PS Sub-nurse's attitude sort of reminds me of a couple of the nurses who were from Africa at the Rehabilitation hospital. They would complain that no one treated them properly, that they were Princesses and back in Africa they were Treated Accordingly. (My mom overheard one of the other foreign nurses complaining that those Princess should have stayed in Africa. LOL!)
