I was just reading an article on Yahoo about how to make your bedroom more conducive to sleep. The author makes the following statement:
Some people are surprised when I recommend that there should be no plants in the bedroom.
The reason is that plants give off carbon dioxide and deplete the oxygen in the air you breathe. Huh?
Now, I realize it's been several years since I had any science classes (in HS or College) but I was in AP Biology in the 11th grade. And I distinctly remember discussing how much more oxygen a plant produces during photosynthesis than they deplete during respiration. So having a few plants around the house is supposed to be A GOOD THING.
Had the author of this article warned the sleeper NOT TO move a bunch of plants into his/her room, seal off the windows/doors, and then fall asleep--well THEN I get where he's coming from: a person would emit more carbon dioxide than a handful of plants can effectivly filter/convert and would die of CO2 poisoning.
At least, that's how I thought I remembered it. If there are any botanists in the house, please correct me if I am wrong.
(I know, the internet is not always a reliable source of information. But when this kind of misinformation is circulated on something as widely read as YAHOO's health section, then I think the researchers have a duty to actually do the research--or, you know: hire fact checkers like they do in real journalism.)
