In the two + years that I have lived here, I've watched the family behind my house interact as a "unit". The mother does nothing to scream at her husband and 3 children. The husband gives it right back. And the kids are little beasts. It is obvious that the parents are using the "new" guidelines for parenting...no discipline. This summer while sitting on my deck, I watched as the little boy dropped his pants and did his business right on their lawn.
Several months ago, I started seeing this adorable black and white cat roaming the neighborhood. He had a collar and tag so other than petting him, I gave him no real consideration. Then a few weeks ago, I noticed that the collar and tag were gone and the cat was definitely looking the worse for wear. His fur was matted and dirty. And his body was thin to the point of being dangerous. In addition, we were having extremely cold weather so I knew he was really hurting. I started putting out bowls of food for him and he showed his gratitude by rubbing against me and purring like a contented kitten.
Yesterday, the 2 girls were outside trying to make the cat play in the snow. They were grabbing at him and basically terrorizing the poor animal. He finally broke loose and headed for the shelter of my deck. The girls chased after him and I had a chance to question them a little.
It seems that the cat belongs to them. But after he had peed and poo'd on the younger girl's bed, he was put outside. After seeing how she was trying to play with him, I knew he was just sending a message, "leave me alone". Tonight when I fed him, I noticed that the matted fur on his throat has pulled away completely, leaving bare skin. And he has numerous other cuts and bruises. He is also declawed so unable to defend himself. It is bad enough that they didn't want him but instead of surrendering him to a shelter, they just turned him into a stray.
I'm trying to figure out how to fit another cat into the house. I have limited space as it is and already have 2 cat pans in the only non-bathroom, non-kitchen area. If I can find space for a 3rd pan, I plan to take this adorable creature to the vet to be sure he is healthy enough to join the other 2 cats. Then we will head straight to a groomer to get the matted and soiled fur attended. Then I plan on calling Animal Services and reporting the beasts who live behind me. Last summer I saw they had a puppy (haven't seen him in ages) tied up to a tree 24/7. They need to be prevented from ever having any animal in that household.
