Summary: Answer to Jinni’s 20 Minutes from the Roadhouse challenge. Ellen watches them and wonders if two people so broken can ever fit together when jagged pieces and haunted eyes are all they have left.
A/N: I wrote this on the urging of Kaylashay and am happy with how it's turned out. Enjoy and please let me know what you think.
Ellen Harvelle knows what broken looks like. Not because she has been working the bar since she bought the place as a newlywed with big dreams and a wide smile. Only to be disappointed when she discovered real life didn’t stop for dreams.
She knows broken because there was a time when she would look in a mirror and it was all she saw, when she would see his eyes empty and know that he was dead. She sometime still saw broken when staring at her reflection and remembering.
Ellen knows broken when she sees the small woman with golden blond hair and not enough meat on her bones. The young woman who sits at her bar a slender hand wrapped around an undrunk bottle and those haunted green eyes that are filled with so much pain Ellen remembers to hug her own golden girl a little tighter.
She thought she had heard it all until Buffy started talking about demons and death and the end of the world and Ellen realizes that someone so strong shouldn’t have broke. That something had pushed that girl until she cracked and crumbled and those eyes got haunted.
After a month Ellen finds out just how a Slayer breaks. She always knew it was about family and when she looks at the girl that should be tucked in her bed instead of facing the evils of the world Ellen knows what broke this girl until all she is is jagged pieces.
She hears of a war and after how one by one a makeshift family was lost and a good little soldier started cracking.
When she sees that Buffy is no longer alone at the bar she begins to worry, not because she’s afraid the girl might get hurt, she knows better than that. But because she’s afraid, when she sees him sitting with her that two people so broken isn’t a good combination.
He’s just as broken, just as lost.
Dean tries to hold on for Sam but Ellen knows the act he puts on for the youngest of John’s sons is a lie cause Dean is as broken as they come and when he sits down next to the small blond Slayer they don’t talk because there are something’s they don’t need words t understand.
She knows that when that boy lost his daddy he lost his direction. Because John raised him to be a soldier and he doesn’t know how to pull himself back together again if he’s not being ordered to.
Sometimes Ellen thinks it was John that started breaking that boy.
Ellen wonders if two broken people, warriors who are tired of fighting and sick of the battle that is there life can stop being broken together.
When she sees Buffy smile softly and move her head towards Dean’s she hopes but doesn’t say a word because she doesn’t want to scare something so fragile.
When she sees his eyes light up for the first time Ellen hides her own smile and shares a look with Ash who assured her that broken isn’t a permanent setting for some people.
She’s glad to see that.
