What if Buffy's slayer potential has been discovered by The Watchers Council in due time? What if she'd been sent to The Watchers Academy where the potential slayers get education and training? What if The Council had caught the members of The Fanged Four and kept them as prisoners and sparring partners for future slayers?
There definitely are some elements of Hogwarts template in the set-up, but the story itself is fresh and original. This unique AU-verse is based on the premise that in the middle of XX century The Watcher Council and The Initiative joined forces, and one of the consequences was the modernization of the Slayer system. As a result, we see all the familiar faces in the new circumstances. Complex, inventive plotting, spot-on voices, fast-moving narrative, paradoxical morality and fascinating choices make "The Rose" a must-read.

Shocked and guilty, Buffy re-sires Spike and becomes his metaphorical soul and conscience. But a soulless vampire who fights the good fight is bad PR. It's unacceptable for demonic higher powers, so they give Spike an ultimatum: he has to kill the human version of himself, William, in an alternate dimension - or he will be destroyed as an unadequate vampire. Darkapple uses popular time-travel ploy with a new twist - Buffy and Spike are transported back in 1880 in a parallel dimension, and they don't have to bother about disrupting the timeline (the biggest obstacle in time-travel fics). Author unravels an inventive detective intrigue but focuses on the characters' ethical choices.

Epic rewrite of the season introduces new elements of mythology into the Buffyverse.
