I'm liking it OK so far. That beginning - with the black-out drunk, waking up naked didn't look good, but it seems to have been a blip. I'm not crazy about them sending Spike away, but if they weren't going to let the relationship go anywhere, then perhaps it's best. I did like the honesty between them from time to time, and I think there was some respect paid to their history. I'm not expecting to like it as much as a flat-out Spuffy fanfic, but I'm cautiously optimistic. It also seems to be more likely to spawn fanfic, so that's a plus.

I haven't read them and have no interest in reading them in the future. I know other people believe differently but as far as I'm concerned, they're basically glorified fan-fiction and I'm not going to pay to read fan-fiction in a format I don't even care for. Yes, I realise that Joss and his team are behind most of what goes on but there's absolutely nothing that will convince me that a real season 8 or 9 would have played out that way if they'd been on TV and that makes it impossible for me to mentally accept it as a legitimate continuation of the story.

I'm not reading, and it's mostly a media preference thing, to be honest. I bought early issues of the comics and was bored by them, gave up long before they got really weird.

Most indicative of all

SPOILER WARNING FOR SEASON EIGHT

I simply don't care that Giles died in the comics. When I heard it had happened (and saw the relevant bit), I just thought... eh. Giles is my guy. If he'd died onscreen, I would have been genuinely sad. This is just pictures - barely recognisable ones at that.

That's when I knew the comics just weren't my canon: I don't care nearly enough!

I've seen friends' copies of the BtVS and AtS comics -- both Dark Horse and IDW -- and have been profoundly disappointed in all of them, for all kinds of reasons. I've found most of the artwork to be awful, most of the characters to be acting and sounding out-of-character, and all of the plots to be either boring, offensive and boring (DH BtVS Season 9), or offensive and ridiculous (DH BtVS Season 8.) Most of all, I'm disappointed that instead of using the freedom of the new medium to bring back all the missing, beloved characters and settings, the comic book companies have instead used that freedom merely to insert un-Buffyish special effects elements, such as cockroach airships, outer-space sexcapades, giant robot Dawns, castles equipped with massive military/NASA technology...there's just been nothing in ANY of the comics that appeals to me. In the IDW ones, I felt a brief bit of hope when Lorne, Fred, and Cordelia apparently returned (along with Wesley, who isn't one of my favorites but I was glad to see him for the sake of the ( ... )
