I've been participating in the Jossverse fandom for a decade now. I rewatch the shows regularly while having written over a hundred drabbles, ficlets, and series for the 'verse. I've shipped everyone from the commonplace pairing, Angel/Buffy to randomly enough, Eve and Dawn in fanworks. I've written meta and essays on the characters. These shows

I still love the BtVS, AtS(and even Firefly) I rewatch them often(just finished a rewatch a couple of months ago)
In spite of it's flaws, Joss Whedon did a magnificent job of creating a show(s) that could last through time. Seriously, look how long it's been off the air and the fans are still here discussing, creating, writing... how many shows can still say that? I'm sure it had it's fair share of problems, and some episodes actually made me cringe(Superstar for example) but on the whole it's still a great show.
Some fans have moved on to more current shows and I too am guilty of writing and creating in other fandoms but my love for the Whedonverse still remains as strong today as it was when it started. And I think it's because of the characters. I still love Angel, Buffy, Riley, Spike etc... And I've even come to adore a character that while I'd liked on the show hadn't really thought of other than as Buffy's watcher..Yep, Giles. He has become one of my favorite characters to write/graphic.
While the show was on the air the only pairing I would write for was Angel/Buffy but since it ended I've written a lot of different pairings and just recently written my very first Spike/Willow. I'm very excited about that. I love writing new(and sometimes rare) pairings. And without Joss' creation none of us would have had the joy of writing or creating for this awesome fandom.
Wow, that kind of sounds like I worship at the altar of Whedon but I really don't. There have been some storylines that have well... made me go a little nuts as I'm sure there have been a few that have done the same for some of the fans as well. I just believe Joss Whedon deserves huge praise for creating such an amazing fandom.
I can't comment on the comics since I don't read them, I don't consider them canon(for me). I prefer to keep my love for the show untainted by cartoons. (Sorry, guys I don't mean to sound offensive. I'm just not a cartoon fan)

There's also an element of nostalgia for me in things like early Buffy episodes, of course. Watching early Buffy, for me, is a bit like curling up in a nice warm duvet with a tub of ice cream.
