Buffy, definitely. I like all four, but Mal and Angel aren't even my favorite characters on their own shows, and Echo is more of a concept than a character for quite a stretch of time. Buffy has everything I love in a hero character -- intelligence, strength, a strong sense of duty with just the hint of resentment, and a good heart, with enough angst and flaws to keep her both realistic and interesting. It also helps that she's a hot chick with super powers.
Buffy. She's a flawed character, but she's also very interesting and Sarah Michelle Gellar did a fabulous job with the role. Angel is also interesting, but I can barely stand him. Mal really did nothing for me. And I'm not that familiar with Echo.
Buffy. Mal is part of a brilliantly assembled ensemble, Echo never grew on me, and Angel is kind of a dick. And I always only watched for Wes and Cordy. And Lorne. And Gunn. And Lindsey and Lilah. And Fred. And Illyria. And Connor, but baby!Connor. So, basically, I'd watch that show much more if it weren't for it's titular character. Who's a bit of a dick. Did I mention that part?
I love all of four of them for different reasons, since they are all incredibly flawed individuals that have undergone severe altercations and difficulties to where they all wound up in the end of their journeys. It's really hard to pick just one.
Buffy because she's the female empowerment symbol for all of us, she has gone through so much and struggled her way through this particular destiny that she cannot get out of, and takes control over it. Angel is kind of that hero looking for redemption, and out of everything I really do like that overall storytelling of someone looking to gain redemption, of finding something to make amends for their past, of what they are.
Mal is for those similar reasons too, he brings all the characters on Firefly together and while he's reluctant to ever admitting that he's a hero, through his bitterness and beaten down soul after losing the war, he continues to keep some optimism for the sake of his crew he considers his family. At the end of Serenity, he realizes that there is something worth

I agree with all of this, even though I decided to pick Buffy as my favourite. It is very hard to choose, because they're all so different, and heroic for different reasons. :-)

Mal was very interesting too but there weren't enough episodes for me to become invested in the character.
I loath Dollhouse.
And I echo eilowyn. Angel was kind of a dick.
