Spike watched from the shadows as Buffy kisses Angel after defeating Caleb.

The First whispers into his ear. “That Bitch!”

His eyes never leave Buffy as Angel shows her the amulet.

Seems it is to be worn by someone ensouled, but more than human.

Someone who is a champion so Spike is sure that Angel will be the one.

Envy flowed through his body, fueling his jealousy and breaking his heart.

How like Angel to show up at the last moment to play the big hero.

Spike can’t watch anymore so he slips away into the darkness where he belongs.

As Buffy pulled away from Angel’s arms, he caught the scent.

At first, it didn’t bother him. Then she told him she needed him to leave.

Her excuse was to provide a second front in case she didn’t defeat the First.

No, something else was going on here. She was covered in Spike’s scent.

Jealousy flared through his body. No, he would never be envious of Spike.

Angel listened to her cookie dough speech and shoved his worries away.

Nothing to worry about because Spike would never take his place in Buffy’s heart.

After all, Spike was no one’s champion.

The First watched as Buffy and Spike slept wrapped in each other’s arms.

The Slayer had sent Angelus away after killing Caleb, but kept the amulet.

Seems the Senior Partners of Wolfram and Hart had taken an interest now.

The Senior Partners had always envied and feared the power of the First.

They had hidden themselves in another dimension eons ago.

Now are they providing the Slayer with a weapon against him?

Or were they supporting the First hoping to gain favor when he won?

The First wasn’t worried.

The vampire wearing the bobble would not make a difference anyways.
