I have a theory about why Sam dreamed about Bela. My theory (and what it is, too) is that Sam really, really needs to get laid remember what it's like to feel human, and to feel something besides despair. And in an incredibly sad way, Bela is the closest thing in his life right now to a real, human female he actually knows and has some kind of connection to, even if that connection is tenuous and not exactly good for his health.

That is my theory.

Glad to be of service. *g* I did have some moments of serious dismay in this episode over the feeling that Sam had been replaced by a pod-Sam, but his dream about Bela was far from the worst of these. It was kind of, wha-huh?? But then, it involved Sam getting flustered and hot and bothered and implicitly, you know, erect, so... yeah, I'm easy.

hee! i agree on the pod-sam bit. hopefully the real sam will have returned by next ep. *hopes*

Here is how I justified the Bela dream to myself last night:

[...] what the Sam/Bela dream says about Sam's character (leave it to Miss Gamble to come up with a Bela scene that didn't make me want to shoot her in the face). He can't bring himself to pick up random floozies like Dean and so his little brain fantasizes about the only "available" woman he has any sort of a familiarity with right now - even if he does hate her and even if she is a total fucking bitch. (Although, admittedly, I was rooting for Bela to have used the root to mess with Sam's mind for a little while there.)

Looking at this again right now I still mostly want to stick with that theory although, as I said, I would've been happier in terms of characterization if it had been Bela messing with his mind and not just Sam coming up with that on his own.

See, I still think that Bela is A GODAWFUL CHARACTER THAT SHOULD GO AWAY AND NEVER RETURN because she's just the embodiment of SHITTY WRITING and AUGH! But I'm coping and this is my coping mechanism.

okay.

*deep breath*

between you and killabeez i'm feeling a bit better. you're right that bela is (sadly) the only human woman he knows and would therefore choose her to fantasize about. but i would have much preferred it if she had been messing with his mind like you said.

*copes with you*

thank you babe. my level of hate for that scene has diminished slightly.

*clings*

also, i hate that the boys are constantly one-upped by her and have everything stolen. i hope she is ultimately devoured whole by fire ants. *crosses fingers*

ps. HI! i hope you're doing okay. got plans for the weekend?

Pretty much, I had to come up with the justification because the scene just makes my skin crawl. Ick.

The only way they could "redeem" having her character in my mind at this point is to give her a truly grotesque death sequence with lots of gore that makes me squeal with glee. Your fire ants idea intrigues me.

Yeah, the one-upping and the stealing is just...so tired, y'know? It's like she's that annoying character they insert into a sitcom when the ratings start dipping. "Oh, that crazy Bela! *canned laughter*" *eyeroll*

HI! I'm kinda really stressed right now but I'm managing. I was going to go to the museum this weekend but I canceled because I don't really have a day to blow off in the city. I've really gotta get some work done.

kripke wonders why we don't like bela. this is a prime example. do not being doing things like this, kripke! *DOES NOT WANT*

thank you! now i'm thinking of fire ants, a barbecue fork AND a spinning saw blade.

EXACTLY! i mean, wtf? shouldn't the boys be getting smarter instead of stupider? shouldn't they learn not to hide things in front of her? and sam, next time you have a sex dream, try to imagine doing it with someong who hasn't shot you, k?

HI! I'm kinda really stressed right now but I'm managing. *sends ( ... )

Seriously. WHY would Sam dream about Bela? Or, well, okay, he's a healthy guy and she's a pretty woman, so I can deal with the dream bit. You can't control your drea- uh, never mind. *remembers what the episode was about*
But WHY would he act that way around her? It was just so. stupid. And so not Sam.

But I actually kinda loved the rest of the episode.

SWEETIE!

*smooshes*

i owe you about a billionty comments and some words like gazebo and titillated. but i just wanted to:

a) say HI
b) say i ♥ you

i guess i didn't mind the dream as much as he actions afterword. like he was some sort of love-struck teen. WTF, show?

as for the rest of the ep, you're right. there was lots of good stuff. i loved the dean parts and the mention of sam's psychic powers and the fact sam looked GORGEOUS. also, he was whumped! and the bobby backstory was good.

and i have to say, i'm really glad dean FINALLY admitted he wanted to live and got to say how he felt. the final conversation in the impala was made of win.

did you see the previews for next week's ep?

Baby, here is no such thing as owing comments.

a) HI!
b) I ♥ you too.
c) I'm working on a little something for you, so your Valentine's package may be a bit delayed. But hopefully better for it. *is innocent*

I know. Sometimes show just gets it so very, very wrong. And even if the dream scene itself could be explained, it felt so ridiculously gratuitious and unnecessary.
But there was Bobby backstory, emo!Sam and demon!Dean (and not to forget the Sammy!whumpage). And Dean's "Okay, good" at the end broke me a little.

did you see the previews for next week's ep?

No previews for me. I'm a good monkey. See no evil, hear no evil (which makes the risk of speaking any evil significantly smaller).
(But did they seem good?)

1) PREVIEWS SEEMED TO BE MADE OF WIN. my hope is possessed zombie monkeys did not write ep.

2) i just sent you valentine, oh yes i did!

3) yes, unnecessary is the word. the rest of the show was all SOOPER SERIOUS, so why for that? *scratches head*

what is your plans for weekend, huh? HUH?

i know i don't "owe" you comments, but this jam-blob loves you and want to blab. :D

My theory on the Sam/Bela dream is not as redeeming as some of the other ones listed above.

Rather, I think it was just a trick of the writers to further make you go "awww, Dean" later on. Because let's face it: Sam's the one who has had love and commitment and someone to come home to, so they show him dreaming about a random hookup, THE COMPLETE OPPOSITE of his brother, the dictionary's example of "womanizer," who dreamed about a life with the one woman who asked him to stay.

buffyaddict13 February 8 2008, 16:36:09 UTC
that could be. but that's a lousy thing to do to sam's character, imo. but that's an interesting thought. and if the writers had a plan instead of going HEY, WOULDN'T THIS BE FUNNY IF WE DID THIS??!! makes me feel better. i think. ;-P

*hug*
