I hope it's not actually schizophrenia, because otherwise I don't think he can be on a working field-team.

Bingo. Even being treated for bog-standard depression is a red flag to a cop's career. Anything as reactive as schizophrenia would definitely cut him from the team.

If they do Hotch/Prentiss canon, it will doubtlessly be as a graceful way to have Paget exit per her contract, not a GSR-type freakjob. You know, more, "We've been trying to keep a lid on these feelings for x years, it's not working, and it's only a matter of time before this ends up wrecking the team or getting someone killed, so I'll go"/"I understand, and I don't like it, but you're right, it's the right thing to do" and then the implication they're dating off-screen after Prentiss is no longer his subordinate. Ed B.'s a classy man. If he does it, he'll do it right by Hotch and Emily.

And if -- hope against hope -- Ed B. convinces the studio to change its mind, he can always have Prentiss stay by having Hotch and Prentiss decided that the job/team is more important than exploring any romantic relationship between the two of them and they intend to stay just friends.
