a few pointless thoughts on a thousand splendid suns

REASON #7 NOT TO LISTEN TO A BOOK ON TAPE:

because it's hard to place your order at the drive thru when you're bawling over the death of a character you love.

so, i listened to the kite runner and a thousand splendid suns on cd. i read the kite runner a few years ago and loved the reader, and especially the story. to this day, i think of the the kites and glass covered string and the beauty of a country i am unfamiliar with.

BUT. splendid suns was so much better. at least, imo. i just finished listening over lunch today, and there was weeping at the starbucks drive thru. i kid you not. it's kind of frightening just how badly i wanted miriam and laila to kill rasheed at the end. but when i realized mariam was going to sacrifice herself and be put to death, omg. i was just sick. what an epically tragic tale. the fact mariam never read jahleel's letter, or saw the videotape of pinnochio breaks my heart. her thinking of the naming the 11 stones before she was killed.  *WEEP* and laila's lasting love for her, how she kept mariam in her heart was so beautiful.

this book reads like a love letter to a broken country and it's gorgeous and heartwrenching and horrible all at the same time. i don't think i'll ever forget this story, especially when i know there really are women like mariam and laila who have had to endure things like this and worse.

khaled hosseini is an amazing author. i'll definitely read anything he writes.

splendid suns left me melancholy but hopeful, and more than anything, thankful that i haven't had to live through the kind of war afhganistan has.

*sigh*

and now i start reading the 3rd dexter book. which i've heard is lame and i know the plot but i can't resist dexter. and omg, the guy that reads those books is just perfect. although now i could of wish michael c. hall read them. or mgg.
