Why do bad things happen to good people?

My brother-in-law had an reaction to a medication he took for his Ulcerative Colitis. Stupid as he is (to stubborn, refuses taking symptoms seriously, don't want to be a sissy and waited 18 months!!! before he got help for his colitis), he waited several days with aches and pain, shortness of breath, chest pains, fever and what-not, to call the hospital. (all symptoms that he where supposed to contact his doctor if they occurred)

They decided he needed an ambulance, which he thought was embarrassing, because "he wasn't that ill".

At last when the doctors worked him up, they diagnosed him with a severe reaction to this drug (he had all the side-effects listed and the list is looong) which is very very rare. His heart was effected and he has an inflammation in the heart muscle, some spots on his lungs and are on a liquid diet... He has to spend several weeks in the hospital, are only aloud short walks with company and can't take any meds for his colitis until he has done his stress test in about a month.

And my sister was the one who got her head bitten off every time she suggested/told him that he should at least call the hospital...
Now she's home alone with a 3,5 month baby (and a 39 year old baby in the hospital)

Lesson learned: Go see the doctor as soon as possible or (almost) die refusing...
