According to the Bhaalspawn template, a Bhaalspawn is a creature "that is infused with a spark of the Diety of Murder's evil;" they carry a piece of his essence, and the final part of the series is basically all about how gathering this essence by killing all the Bhaalspawn is the method through which the new god will be created. The template is ( Read more... )

I AM GOING TO BED SOON REALLY. But a few comments before I do.

--A lot of the issues with the template go away when you remember that outsiders can also advance by class level; if they do, they gain hit dice, saves, BAB and skills as a member of that class, not as an outsider. Any outsider MAY choose to increase their HD (graining d8 base hit points, good save progressions, 8 skill points, etc, etc), but they don't have to. (Side notes: "Good" save progression means +1 base save per 2 levels. Most classes only have this for one save; rogues have good Reflex and wizards have good Will, for example. Also, FEAR outsiders who advance by class, because class abilities usually combine in horrific ways with their racial abilities.)

In theory, Imoen could take a level of Outsider and become Rogue X/Wizard X/Outsider 1; she'd gain d8+Con hitpoints, 8+Int skill points, the good save progression for all saves (+1 to all saves), darkvision 60' and the Martial Weapon Proficiency feat (giving her access to the rest of the martial weapons). She has no REASON to, and it would actually probably be a poor idea, but she could.

--I forgot about the native subtype when we discussed this earlier, but I think it would very neatly handle the Protection From/Circle Against problem, because I think those only work on non-native outsiders. I'll check that tomorrow, along with the wordings on the new spells. Because I'm tired and I'd have to dig through my books.

Ah, see, I missed that somehow. That does actually handle a lot of the problems. ...Though I'm incredibly amused by the fact that basically everything about the outsider seems to be optional now.

Yeah, statistically, it's probably best for her to continue along as a Wizard. But since she's only "recently" ha, she's been in camp how long now? had her whole Bhaalspawn nature brought to surface, it makes sense for her not to have any real development as an Outsider anyway.

Heh. Always so helpful, Fran!

Outsider hit dice are meant for when you're designing your own outsiders, or so that you know how many skill points or whatever an outsider's supposed to get so you can customize. (There are a few outsiders that advance in caster level and casting progression with their outsider hit dice. They're MEAN.)

Racial hit dice are almost always inferior to class hit dice, yeah. So really taking outsider would be a flavor thing. Might be funny in camp someday, temporarily...

Apparently the circle and prot spells only function on called creatures -- ie, creatures summoned away from their home plane. Oops. (I also checked the Detect descriptions, and I was right there; Imoen radiates good and chaos as though she was a 51st-level character. Or a cleric.)

Oh, I see. That've pretty flexible. (...Yes, I can see where that could get nasty.)

You're right, that could be fun to play around with.

Actually, Imoen is NG, if that matters at all. ...51st-level, really?

Yes, yes they are. (...there are wizards out there with d8 hit dice. Do not meet them in a dark alley. Or anywhere.)

NG just means she radiates only good. And yes, 51st level or higher. Most people don't get overwhelming auras unless they're epically powerful. :D

I can't believe I just wrote "that've." (Unless you can manage to keep them in an anti-magic shell?)

...Jeeze, she's tracking that aura all over camp. XD

Typos happen to everyone. XD (Good luck with that -- they counterspell like motherfuckers and they have weapon proficiencies. Ethergaunts, for reference, from Fiend Folio. There are other races which get roguelike or fighterlike progression, too.)

...if someone detects on Imoen, they lose the spell and are stunned for a round. :D

Ouch, that's right.

But then the question is how this would translate to all those people in camp who just sense things...seeing as there's precious few who would be casting a Detect spell anyway (y hello thar, Francescu).

Well, it depends on what and how they sense, really. It wouldn't exactly affect Fran, since his truesight spell doesn't measure good or evil -- it reveals the nature of things. (And if looking at the onyx essential didn't blind him, Imoen probably wouldn't. XD) Imoen probably pings people who can detect forces of good as a Force Of Good -- assuming the fact of being Bhaalspawn doesn't make her ping as tainted. But, y'know, it's complicated because D&D's cosmology has absolute morality, and most others don't as such...hmmmm.

Personally I'd say she registers as otherworldly on most people's radar, and if they have a particular alignment-detection function, she registers as "the good kind of otherworldly, mostly." Mind, if we get another FR character in here somehow, they'd Detect Good and go blind.

Ah, good, that saves a lot of trouble. Also yes, considering how much power UL essentials seem to have, I'd have to agree. XD

Too bad it's so unlikely someone will app another FR character, huh?

Well, I guess someone could app Greyhawk or Ravenloft or Planescape...okay, really the only other viable option is Planescape.

...which would be awesome. Ravel Puzzlewell for counselor.

I actually don't know Planescape, so I'll have to take your word on Ravel, heh.

...you haven't played Planescape Torment. It's probably the best CRPG ever made -- Bioware's greatest triumph in the genre. And it's still around for, like, five dollars.

No, but it's oooold -- pre-BG2. I ran it just fine off an emulator, long ago, so if you've got one...
