nWoD-The Beginning

Feb 08, 2010 10:21

System: nWoD Mashup with Burning mods.

PlayerS:

Brandy: Aubrey, Werewolf
Cameron: ?, Mage
Alec: Luca, Mortal
Christie: Yvette, Werewolf
Fattig: Vetrata, Changeling
Steve: Deangelo, Geist

So, we started out by defining the landscape around the characters. We located a number of their houses, described a few of their adversaries.

Honestly, the game started a little bit more with a whimper than a BANG. That's mainly because I was intending to start with the ending scene, but the guy was freaking crazy badass and I didn't want to just start there.

So we started with kinda weirdness, which was somewhat intended. The Oath spirit made them swear an oath the night previous, and waking up the next morning no one could remember EXACTLY what the oath was.

The group got a call from one of the PCs young daughter, asking where her mom was, then where her real mom was, and why nana hadn't made breakfast.

The basic plot:

Someone kidnapped Luca's wife (Yvette's sister), and Luca's mother-in-law, but not Cosette. Some PCs investigated Luca's house and found a bunch of herbs over Cosette's door, as well as three diamond shaped holes above the window. They found no sign of dead bodies, even when supernaturally looking, but found a bunch of terror spirits, the strongest of which was Branches-on-Glass.

Others investigated dead bodies attributed to the Trident killer, then went back to check out the crime scene. They found three strange, diamond shaped holes above the window.

Still others investigated the 'Trident' angle and found that a trident reported to have been used by Sanguinus Maximus had been stolen from the Colisum Museum.

One went off and did his own thing, avenging himself on a priest.

The next morning, the group reconvened, had a brief discussion on morality. Beast-of-Rage, the Alpha of a neighboring pack, interrupted the meeting, claiming that something from the Coliseum came and killed some of his pack then night before. The group argued with him, and he finally left, with the statement that if the group didn't take care of the problem in their territory, he'd take care of it and their territory for them. The group agreed to go that night to take care of the problem. We scene skipped to there.

The group went to the coliseum and made their way to the ground floor. They couldn't figure out where to search, and then! Out of the shadows stepped Beast-of-Rage, who had brought his pack to deal with the problem anyway. A fight almost broke out, but was curtailed. The other pack split up to check out what was there, but the main pack still didn't leave the floor.

Rumblings began, as of massive machinery, and a huge spike shot up, splitting one of the other packs werewolves in half. As everyone tried to recover from that, behind Beast-Of-rage, who had ascended to one of the old box seats, rose The Trident Killer, a massive man dressed as a gladiator wielding the huge trident of Sanguinus Maximus. He stabbed Beast-Of-Rage, but did so poorly, knocking him to the ground and rolling him down the steps.

At this point, the heroes reacted, diving into the randomely opening and closing traps on the arena floor, away from the Trident Killer. As they fell, they saw the Trident Killer jump and slam his trident through Beast-of-Rage, killing him instantly.

The groups got separated in the tunnels. One group ran into the Trident Killer, who was coming down from the box seat. They got a head start, but he pursued them through the tunnels. One group just started smashing machinery until the place started coming down, then stopped. The third group found Luca's wife and mom-in-law, but were separated by a huge pit from them. The Geist leaped across.

What Rocked

The discussion after I named the gladiator (Maximum Blood). Gladiators were totally the monster trucks of Rome.

The reaction to the TK. He didn't need any mechanical fear advantage to make people run. AWESOME.

The discussions regarding morality. Very interesting to catch the different 'species' opinions all in one group.

The discussions between Yvette and Luca. Yvette had a kid and dumped her on Luca. Awesomeness resulted.

Some of the beliefs were great. Players hammered on them until something broke, and that was good. Particularly Luca's 'I will know why Yvette ditched her kid with me."

The Coliseum was lots of fun, and it was a good cliffhanger.

"Featured skills" to advance skills seemed to work real well.

I like Beast-of-Rage, but killing him was good too.

What Didn't

One player wrote a belief I thought was a bit over the top, but awesome. He followed that up by going a bit Gonzo, which wasn't as cool as it could have been. I hope he'll figure out how to interact with the system and get into it a bit. The danger of giving away Narrative Control, I guess.

The scene economy system that works well in BE is having a hard time adapting to this game and play style. Gonna have to tweak it a bit. But it'll work.
