I am looking for either:

A) A good doctor or rheumatologist that specializes in/diagnoses and treats Fibromyalgia.

B) A pain management/pain medicine specialist that is worth going to and takes Univera Plus Medicaid.

I'm looking for names, reviews, and personal experiences/feedback. Thanks for anyone that can help!

Dr. Gerald Peer for the pain specialist who specializes in pain medication and back problems (but does a lot more than just backs). I see him (for my endometriosis which is a chronic pain disease) and he's absolutely fantastic. He listens to everything you have to say and take your pain issues seriously. The only downside is that it'll take a few months for you to get in to see him, but believe me he is well worth the wait. He literally changed my life. And yes, he prescribes the proper medicine for pain, rather than telling you to just take tylenol and sleep it off. He'll dose you with meds that will actually help your pain problems. I know a few other people who go to him and they just adore him because he actually cares and takes the time to get to know you. When you go back each time he remembers things like what you do for a living, your interests, etc. I've never had a doctor like him and will keep him as my doctor as long as possible.

I know he takes Univera (that's what I have) but plus medicaid I am unsure. He probably takes it... and besides if your insuance isn't accepted for some reason it's $98 for a visit, something easily saved for while you're waiting to see him. When you call they'll let you know.

1230 Eggert Rd.
Amherst, 14226
838-0640

ETA: It only takes a while to get in the first time. Once you're a patient he'll want to see you at least once every three months depending on your condition and will be available if you need him between appointments.

Thank you! My old primary doctor mentioned his name to me, but I hadn't heard any personal experiences so I was a little skeptical. I have endometriosis, too- it's good to hear he takes his patients seriously and doesn't just dismiss them with a bottle of Ibuprofen 800. haha Is he a doctor that does random/frequent drug tests? I don't mind taking the tests, I just know there are some pain doctors that will call you out of nowhere and have you go down there to get tested right then and there, and I can't do that as I don't drive/have a car.

You're very welcome. Here's how it played out for me. On my first visit he had me do a lot of weird things... follow his finger, walk on me heals, things like that. I think he was both testing my back (habit) and making sure I wasn't on drugs. But that was it. He has never drug tested me. My first visit he asked me if I'd taken any pain meds in the past that helped and I told him what did work (it as a narc pain killer) and he presribed it to me.

Oh the endo. If you're anything like me you've had the fun of going through different doctors who think it's in your head and you can just deal with it. Not Dr. Peer. He is very knowledgable with endo and is very willing to help. All he wants is for you to be honest with him and to tell him how bad the pain really is. I was scared shitless on my first visit but he put me at ease right away and the scars from all the bad doc visits in the past are finally subsiding.

I've been seeing him for a year. My dad sees him too and has been going for years, and never reported needing a drug test or anything like that.

I've told Dr. Peer several times how before I was seeing him that my endo left me bed-ridden and how no other docs believed me. I follow that up with how now because of him I can get up every day, work, exercise and lead a pretty normal life. It's absolutely amazing! It'll take 3-4 months probably for you to get in, but just tell the receptionist what's going on and she'll put you on a move-up list. You'll also have a questionaire to fill out and bring on your first visit.

Any other questions just msg me. I am happy to help anyway I can. I hate endometriosis so much, but I'm glad we have a doctor locally who can help. He doesn't need to see it to believe it; just telling him about your daily life is enough for him!

That is a wonderful reccomentation. I wonder if he would take me without a diagnosis on a condition. No one will listen to me or take me seriously.

It's worth a shot. Do you think you have endo too or another condition? Pain is pain and if it's not being managed your quality of life can be completely diminished. You really have nothing to lose. It's worth it to at least talk to him and get some suggestions.

If this is endo related I have a couple good doctors who specialize in the disease but don't do well on pain management front. So you can get a doc who will get in and surgically remove the problem (however it's temporary but can provide a long time of relief) and one for pain management. That's how I roll.

And if endo isn't your problem, then sorry for the extra advice you didn't need!

My problem is mostly arthritic.. my primary doctor is giving me a very hard time with pain management and disability issues. I should probably just go see a specialist behind his back.:P

Dr. Peer would be happy to help you I'm sure. He gets fed up with doctors who don't listen to their patients and provide less than adequate pain management. Have you tried Celebrex? It's a medication designed for things like arthritis and have been proven to be pretty helpful!

Give him a call, you don't have anything to lose!

He's not accepting new patients and he doesn't take my insurance! :( :( :(

Oh no!! He's become pretty popular I guess. It costs $98 to see him out of pocket (I had a lapse in insurance once and couldn't skip that appointment). I would try again in a few months. There are other pain doctors in the area too-- if you google "pain doctor, buffalo NY" you should get a listing.

Sorry he's not accepting new patients right now, that sucks!
