gardening dorks: plant swap?

Mar 16, 2009 13:35

I was starting seeds under my grow-lights today, and I thought perhaps I'd post here to see if anyone else has been doing this.
I always start a few extra plants, just in case some don't sprout. I have a pretty tiny garden, so, say, if all twelve of the tomatoes I just planted come up and thrive, I don't really have room for them! I wondered if other people have the same problem, if you can really call it a problem.
So I just thought I'd float this out there: would anyone be open to having a plant swap? Get rid of your extra X to get something you wouldn't have thought to start yourself, or a different variety of Z, or something like that?
I only plant vegetables, because I'm currently in a mania of seeing how much produce I can get out of an itty-bitty North Buffalo yard (I need a Victory Garden sign! Where can I get one?), but if it came planting time and I could swap some extra tomatoes for some flowers I'd totally be all over that. (It could include not just started seeds but also divided perennials, if it did happen.)

So, just guaging interest-- our guaranteed frost-free date around here is May 17th, so it's a while until these tomatoes I've just planted even sprout, let alone are ready to plant! But is anyone interested in maybe seeing about setting something up? I'm only a beginning to intermediate-level gardener so I'm always interested in trying new things. And if people are interested enough, I will stick in a few extra seeds while I'm planting, so I'll have enough to swap.

On a related note, I'm still on the lookout for good local garden centers, not just nurseries but suppliers of all kinds of supplies (I asked last year). Sunview on Sheridan is gone and I have not yet found anyone local with a good selection of plants and supplies, who is not ridiculously expensive. There's Home Depot, ick, and then there are all these little places who have fancy-schmancy plants and no selection for a zillion dollars, and I'm just not happy. (Hence, starting my own!) Someone mentioned a place called Urban Roots but I haven't found it and don't know. I'd love more suggestions, while I'm starting a thread.

Ooh, I don't know how to tag a post. I'll give it my best shot.
