back in March '06, I got the Big O a mac mini for his birthday. He used it to play games for most of that time, then this summer, I built him a decent wintel whitebox, with the notion of using the mini as a Mythtv Client for the basement theatre.

I'd planned to do this upgrade this winter when it was too cold to work in the garage on furniture... but due to a remarkable set of coincidences involoving the living room renovation, the incompatibility of the older version of Ubuntu working with a wifi dongle, I've pushed all that up.

This involved the following steps:

1) upgrade the existing mythtv server to Ubuntu Koala.
2) upgrade the RAM on the existing mythtv server.
3) upgrade the existing mythtv version to something current enough to run on Koala.
4) for once and for all finish the entry of metadata into the mythtv system.
5) upgrade the OS/Mythclient on the existing living room HTPC.
6) upgrade OSX/Bootcamp/Ubuntu on the mini
7) install a mythtv client on the mini.

Unintended gremlins falling in my path.
1) The backup wireless router failed in a subtle, yet catastrophic way, forcing me to fix a newer one that appeared to be damaged from an electrical storm.
2) Upgrade the RAM on the Mini, as Leopard/Snow Leopard require at least a gig of ram.
3) Find a copy of Leopard/Snow Leopard to install.

For the record, items 1-5 have been completed, as well as #1 on the gremilin list. Last night I started tackling the 2 and 3 on the gremlin list, and was informed of the following:

Apple considers a four year old mini too old to support in anyway. They refuse to sell me the RAM to upgrade, and they refuse to let their techs install Hardware that they don't sell/approve.

Even this is 'OK' as I can still get the RAM relatively cheaply on amazon and, I can watch a youtube video on doing the upgrade, but I'd rather spend my time designing the new livign room coffee table so I can gather a materials list and get crackalackin' on it this weekend.

Apparently, the snow-leopard 'upgrade' can be installed on a machine that only has 'tiger,' but the EULA specifically says it's 'illegal' to use the upgrade without first purchashing 'leopard' (even though there's no copy restriction on the actual software) forcing you to drop another $120 for the 'box set' version of snow-leopard.

So let me get this straight: Apple is costing my time to install a HW upgrade they refuse to support after only four years, then they have the gall to try to guilt me into paying an additional $120 for a software upgrade?

!@#$ apple, I'm charging them $120 for waisting my time. I'd love to charge them more for going out of their way manipulating me to toss a perfectly usable machine to buy something that will be less functional (i.e. apple TV), but I can't figure out how to do it.

For the record, I really want to get a smart phone this month when my contract is up, but I just can't see getting in bed with those fascist asshats.
