Tealeaves and hot water

Jan 16, 2012 12:03

So my laptop was nicked from my house on Thursday by some dipthong who pried open the front door(!) and went through the house opening doors and drawers. They left with as, far as we know, only the laptop and my old iphone which I gave to
i_kender when I got a new one. The laptop is a huge four year old shiny white Dell and so looks a great deal more valuable than it is but, importantly, I installed Prey on it a while ago. If I get it back - and I am going to assume I won't - it will be because I was able to get pictures of the person using it and screenshots of what they were doing, along with ip addresses and a rough geographical location and give them to the police. If I don't, I am going to lock it down with a scary warning message on the screen and I have already, I hope, wiped all my browser history, email information and I can see that so far no-one has actually got into my password-protected profile.

Allow me to recommend Prey to laptop users. If you have an iphone 4 or 4s or an ipad or macbook, the Apple product (mobileme or findmyiphone) does the same job. I think I will probably be happy just to know for sure that some stranger hasn't got into my email or bank details or read my DW/LJ accounts.

In further news, there is no heating or hot water at my house and the outside temperature is around 1 degree C. Woo! It's at times like these I really am deeply grateful to Alan for leaving me a little pot of money. Life is so much easier when the idea of replacing a laptop or paying to get a boiler fixed doesn't throw me into a panic.
