Is there a good book for the casual beginner?

I'm interested in Buddhism in a very casual sense, and I'd like to read more about it. I don't want to be taught how to practice Buddhism, nor do I want to read something that patronizes my intelligence, ie "Buddhism for Dummies," etc... I have been exposed to undergraduate-level philosophy and theology, and I'd like something that is at or above that level. I simply want to read about the philosophies of the beliefs from an intellectual point of view. Does anyone have any suggestions?

Thank you!

By the way, I just joined this community. Hello all!
