Well, I still miss the hell out of Harley. I went to her grave on Thanksgiving Day. It's always dark on a work day when I get home, and somehow I just end up too busy on the weekends. I was emotional Thursday, missing the chance to give her some T-day leftovers, and also thinking ahead to the emptiness of not seeing her open her Christmas gifts.
As aforementioned, Peg is an awesome comforter, helping me through the rough patches. Sharing her birds with me has been wonderful too. They aren't the same as a big Great Dane who will climb onto the recliner with you or who can handle a big bear hug. They're small, fragile cockatiels, and still a little skittish with me for the most part. But Petey lets me rub my nose across the back of his neck and Jeri lets me tickle her neck with my finger sometimes. And they help distract me from my loss as well as provide much amusement.
Well, adding to that is Willy. Willy is a 20-something year old Amazon Parrot, with a red face and green body with red spots. It was Peg's uncle's for about 18 of those years, and Willy had come from an abusive home before that. Add to that the fact that the last year or so, Peg's uncle has not actually lived with the bird. So it's been pretty lonely. So he gave it to Peg and she gave it to me. So now I have a new pet. Willy, the Amazon Parrot. It's going to take a while to get him used to the new life. On one hand, I can see that he enjoys his life much better already, because he is near Petey and Jeri, and because he is kept in a clean cage and gets lots of attention compared to what he used to have. But he is still unsure of Peg and I, so only I dare to reach my hands in his cage to change the water and food. I did get a war wound from the one time, when he caught a finger with the side of his mouth. But mostly I am good at preventing him from getting past my Kung Fu.
And he is beautiful. Very Christmasy in his red and green plumage. Beautiful bird. He'll love it here eventually.
Hope everyone has a pleasant and safe Christmas season.
