Was the first with Gene Wilder or the second, with Johnny Depp, better? Discuss.

I love them equally and feel that the Johnny Depp one matched more closely what I remembered from the book.

I agree the Johnny Depp version did follow the book more closely, however, the changed the ending in a way that I did not appreciate. (the part with his father and the candy, I was not a fan of this twist on one of my favorite stories)

Although I can't forget the amazing music and fun story of the first version with Gene Wilder. I love Gene Wilder though, so I may be biased.

Gene Wilder version was fantastic as a kid. The "freakout" was truly terrifying. However, I love the Augustus Glute (however his last name is spelled) song in the Johnny Depp version.

Yeah the ending on the Johnny Depp version was slightly off, BUT, that oompa loompa made up for it. I love Deep Roy for being the oompa loompas.
