Carter criticizes Bush. “I think as far as the adverse impact on the nation around the world, this administration has been the worst in history.”
Bush camp dismisses and insults Carter- “I think it’s sad that President Carter’s reckless personal criticism is out there,” White House spokesman Tony Fratto responded Sunday from Crawford, Texas, where Bush spent the weekend.
“I think it’s unfortunate,” Fratto said. “And I think he is proving to be increasingly irrelevant with these kinds of comments.”
On Monday Carter goes on damage control. Interviewed on the TODAY Show about the comments, Carter said, "They were maybe careless or misinterpreted." He said he “certainly was not talking personally about any president.”
When pressed by NBC’s Meredith Vieira as to whether he was saying his remarks were careless or reckless, the former president said, “I think they were, yes, because they were interpreted as comparing this whole administration to all other administrations."

http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/18759682/ I am disappointed that Carter did not stand by his initial statements. To call his own words careless/misinterpreted saddens me. And then to hear political commentators and other know-nothing-know-it-alls say that Carter had no right to criticize President Bush?!?!?! OMFG?!?!?! Uhhh Freedom of speech dumbasses.
Carter may not have been the best while he was in office, but he has done much since leaving office that makes me respect him as a leader and as an individual. I have to agree that the Bush administration has more than bumbled our foreign policy. While it is good to take a stand, one must be willing to admit mistakes and to sometimes bend. However, I don't think that Carter should have to do "damage control" on his opinions. I do feel that the Bush administrations inability to compromise or admit fault has tarnished this country's reputation. And to call a former president irrelevant... well that just gets my dander up. I feel that anyone who has fulfilled the role of president no matter his success or approval rating should have some advice to give. Hindsight is always 20/20. Who better to offer advice than someone who has been there done that? If Carter did things right, or if he made mistakes, I'm sure he has much insight to offer. I believe that with age comes experience and knowledge. I find it sad that our society feels the need to shun and bury older generations whose experiences and wisdom are invaluable. Shame on you Bush. Stop being a petulant child and respect/listen to your elders.
