When they dragged him back in, McCoy thought he wasn't breathing. He experienced a moment of pure, unadulterated panic before his training kicked in, and he blindly set about determining how to bring Jim Kirk back to life. Before he could even start CPR, Jim gave a great gasp and McCoy sank back on his heels, grateful he didn't have to break his captain's ribs on top of whatever their captors had done. McCoy touched Jim's shoulder. "Jim," he murmured. "Can you hear me?"
Jim nodded, face pale and drawn. He sucked in a pained breath, eyes blinking furiously as he stared fixedly at the ceiling. "Can you move, Jim?" McCoy pressed in a low voice. He was well aware of Uhura's stare pounding into the back of his skull. Jim closed his eyes briefly before shaking his head negative. His fingers were convulsing unconsciously, and McCoy could see a fine tremor shake his legs where they sprawled on the dirty ground. "Help me," McCoy ordered, spinning on Uhura. She nodded, and together they moved Jim towards one of the walls in the cell. McCoy dropped to a sitting position and dragged Jim's head onto his lap, trying to elevate it and help him breathe easier.
Jim had kept his jaw tightly clenched through the entire action, but now he let out a breathy whimper, eyes closed tight against the pain. McCoy knew exactly how high Jim's threshold was, and that Jim was actually vocalising his agony meant something awful. It meant that Jim should be unconscious with shock right now.
"What's wrong with him?" Uhura breathed in awe. McCoy glared at her.
"They tortured him," McCoy said succinctly. She blinked at him.
"Obviously. But... the Captain never breaks under torture," Uhura said cautiously aware that she was pissing McCoy off.
"He's human, Lieutenant," McCoy snapped. Uhura threw a glance at Sulu, who had strategically placed himself between Chekov and the kid's view of the captain. Sulu wisely kept his trap shut.
"Bones," Jim choked out, his entire body shaking. McCoy pressed a hand to Jim's chest, trying to gently hold him still.
"Hush, darlin', I'm here," McCoy murmured, leaning over Jim, soothing his hair back from a fevered forehead. "We're gonna get out of here, just you wait. Just hang on."
"Doctor-" Spock started.
"Look, anyone else would be in shock right now," McCoy growled, his hand curling protectively over Jim's labouring chest. He met Spock's cool gaze, ready to start another verbal spar if the Vulcan breathed another word about their CO's condition.
"I was merely going to suggest we escape," Spock said without a change in tone. "It appears that the captain, even half-conscious, was able to pick the guard's pocket of the key to our confines." His steady gaze flicked to Jim's hand. McCoy followed, and sure enough, a key nestled in Jim's loose grip. McCoy swallowed the crest of pride that suddenly flushed his entire body, and picked the key out of Jim's hand with a whisper of thanks.

Awesome fill. I love it when Jim is still resourceful even when he's in so much pain. And I really love Bones taking care of him. Thanks so much for sharing!
