I have begun searching for a car. The thing is though, I'm buying USED. On my salary, I don't think I can afford new, especially if it's going to take 5 years to pay off

I owned a Ford Focus for four years- a 2003 to be exact.
It had it's quirks. Like if I tried to accelerate too fast, the engine would stutter. But otherwise it drove well. I did have to have the trunk lock replaced twice, and it broke a third time and I just ignored it XP
My fiancee' had one (a 2000- horrible car, so much wrong with it!), and my best friend STILL drives one. It's not even 100,000 miles yet, and it's having problems every other month.
But here is my warning- In my experience, Ford Focuses are good little cars if you treat them right and baby them from the start. Mine was nearly new- only 8,000 miles when I bought it (and I babied that thing until it died due to car accident). But if you get them after one or two people have driven them, and they didn't take good care of the car... You will suffer for it.
They are not like little Hondas or Toyotas- they do not do well under harsh treatment @_@
That, and get a subscription to Consumer Reports online- it has a wealth of knowledge on new and used cars from many years. It has never failed me when looking for a car!
