fading pictures

Today I saw a fading picture of you.

Between the celluloid of your pictures and the cellulite I ignore
the way your hair is just as unruly as mine
and the way I can never make up my mind about you.

Between the things we do when we hang out
and the six months that go by between seeing you again.

Between the Bust-A-Groove we play and the rats you care for.

I see you bobbing up and down in a sea of opiates.

Tonight I drank from that sea myself, in the vain hope that it might lower the tide and keep your head above water. I don't think I can swim out to save you or I'll drown too... but maybe, just maybe I can throw a lifeline far enough.

Maybe I can be your raft.
and if we make it back to shore, just to show the ocean who's boss; I want a wedding on the beach. Because you'll owe me your life, and the only thing I can think to do is give you mine back.

Poseidon, look at me now.
