I would imagine everyone's spirit is different. Ranulf-san could be in the mood for a shy spirit, or a hyper spirit. Maybe he wants someone brave or maybe he is in the mood more for someone creepy. That is why you should wait for him to come back to ask him. Then you can pick out the perfect spirit... assuming he actually wants one.
