cluster culture

The general attitude of GHC3000 seems to be that the place is even more so our home than 5207 was. Probably this is because of the attitudes that the new cluster comes with - complete freedom to eat food inside, etc - and the sort of space it occupies - larger and more open than 5207, and also more central to a lot of campus ( Read more... )

The furniture in Gates is unreasonably uncomfortable, too. I'm sitting in the third floor commons right now, and I can't find a position that isn't either straining my back or my neck.

Only those white things filled with balloons. The chairs on the third floor should be sat in sideways. Most other chairs in Gates are really comfy if you sit in them normally!

I'm too old/disabled/fat to sit in them sideways. Ahh, well. I guess my complaint isn't so much about the chairs as the tables - if they were about six inches higher I wouldn't need to hunch over quite so much in order to type.

You sir are my hero. Helium is required.

I just worked out, approximating the thing as 4 feet in diameter and 1 foot thick - that much helium weighs 64 grams, and the same amount of air weighs 428 grams, so an optimal rendition of this prank would reduce the benches' weight by close to a pound. Now where to find materials...

I got the balloons (22x) at the art store for $.30 each, and notice how not-filled the benches are.

So, you can get lots balloons for cheap at Papermart (Morewood and Baum, I think a 15-20 minute walk from campus); I just checked my bag of leftovers, and they were 72 for $6. They also appear to do helium either as disposable canisters or tank rentals... no idea about the prices, though.
