CONEY ISLAND CARNIES BARKING- NY Post

By RICH CALDER

RALLY: Miss Cyclone Angie Pontani, merman "Tigger" Ferguson and dancers protest a builder's plan yesterday.

March 31, 2007 -- It was a freak show at City Hall yesterday as hundreds of Coney Island burlesque queens, mermaids and other colorful characters rallied against a plan by developer Thor Equities to bring luxury condos to the fabled amusement district.
"Don't let Coney Island be nailed by Thor's hammer!" yelled event organizer Dianna Carlin, sporting a 1920s-style, ruffled dress with a glittered, feathered headdress.
The event concluded with jaw-dropping, traffic-stopping march up Broadway featuring a 20-piece band that could rival Coney Island's annual Mermaid Parade.

I wish I was there but had to work. Anyone have any photos? :-)

Thor Equities wants to build a $2 billion year-round entertainment complex, including high-rise condos, along the massive assemblage of beachfront land the company has gobbled up.

Dressed in beauty-pageant attire, the reigning Miss Cyclone, lovely Angie Pontani, joked that the developer is a "Thor, I mean thorn, inmy side."

"Building luxury condos in the heart of Coney Island makes as much sense as eating before riding the Break Dancer," she said, referring to the spinning Astroland Park ride.

James "Tigger" Ferguson, who hopped along in a gold merman costume, said: "We have enough condos, enough Mickey D's! Save Coney Island!"

Carlin's Lola Staar Souvenir Boutique was evicted by Thor last month after she allegedly violated a confidentiality clause in her lease. Thor CEO Joe Sitt called her before the rally to offer a new lease, Carlin said.

While she was hopeful a deal could be reached, she said he never considered canceling the protest. "We'll fight Thor from the sparkling sea to City Hall," she boasted.
