Why has my AC betrayed me?

My ACs at both my mom's and dad's house have failed. (WRRRRRRY?!) Which, anyone living within 30 degrees north of the equator will tell you, is a horrible occurrence in the summer. My friends offer me sympathy, but sympathy doesn't lower a homes temperature from 87 degrees F to a cooling 72.

Although, out of everything happening now, AC troubles should be the least of my problems.
