First of all, I'd like to recommend the Wait Wait... Don't Tell Me! podcast. For those who don't know, Wait Wait... Don't Tell Me! is NPR's weekly news quiz. While that might sound dull to some, it is rather funny and you might just learn something! Plus Mo Rocca is sometimes a panelist so there's that. I also want to share a link that Very Short List delivered to me today:
TrouYou. It's using clips from YouTube to make songs. It probably isn't the most original concept but I think it's very well done. If I had just heard the music without explanation or visual aids, I might not have been able to guess it was a mash up.
Anyway, we saw Watchmen last weekend, after I read the book the week before. I was underwhelmed. Don't get me wrong, I thought it was good. But I think both Iron Man and the Dark Knight have spoiled me. I'm pretty sure my issues with the movie had little to do with my reading the book first. It had more to do with an overly long sex scene (and I can feel you roll your eyes as you read that Kristofer, just do you know...even though you're in the future) and the use of pop music. I don't have a problem with pop music in movies obviously and didn't even really think it was bad for the movie completely. But sometimes it made it feel cheesy and the fact that I'm pretty sure there was at least hour without it and in its place a regular score didn't help things. I was originally going to write a huge entry filled with spoilers for both the book and the movie (I would have warned you don't worry) but have since decided I don't have the energy. Plus even though most of my friends are geeky and nerdy and not afraid of the printed word, I'm not sure how many of you have read Watchmen. Just something that occurred to me recently.
I also just finished reading The Other Boleyn Girl. Dear God why, you might ask. Well historical fiction has always kind of interested me as a concept. However, before picking it up I thought to myself "You know, I probably would rather just read a book about the real King Henry VIII and his wife fetish." After finishing the book, I'm kind of torn. I think I still would rather read a book about the real Tudors and all their nuttiness, because it is intriguing on its own merit and doesn't need fiction to make it any crazier. But the book wasn't bad and the same author has written other books as well and I kind of want to give them a try. Next on my list is a non-fiction book, Guns, Germs and Steel so we'll how "dry" it is compared to a novel.
Life is kind of weird right now because I basically only work on the weekends, therefore Kris and I don't do much. We try to fit stuff in once I get off work and we spend evenings during the week together, obviously but not very much goes on. Makes me sad. I'm looking forward to getting a real job. I'm just tired of waiting for my life to start. It feels like that's been going on since 2003. Always waiting for that one thing so everything else can just fall into place.
Alright back to laundry and Internet cruising. Ta ta for now!
PS: I honestly can't remember whether you underline or italicize book and movie titles which is why I often don't bother. My main issue is it seems like different people use different things at different times. I've seen books in particular italicized, in quotes, underlined, in bold, everything! So I'm lost. But it's bugging me now. HELP!
