its fleet week in portland. one of my friends is super excited about the sailors, but i think its all talk.

we walked around downtown. there was a carnival with rides. unfortunately they were charging admission. instead we drank our whiskey and hung around down by the river under the bridge.

this is one of the many outdoor water fountains around Portland. Locals call them Benson Bubblers. I never thought about them much. Then while reading a book on portland history in my friends bathroom i came across this picture.

it makes sense that the fountains are so old, but seeing those people in their old timey dresses put it in a different context.

under the bridge is a beautiful display about course of the willamette river. one of my friends just moved to gladstone, so i thought it was only appropriate

Portland Fire Department

Zero next to a creepy statue of former mayor Vera Katz, which is also located -eerily- under the bridge

the docks were unlocked for some reason. we walked down to the bottom and avoided the geese.

oh the things you notice as a pedestrian. we walked over the bridge away from downtown. less than 20 feet from the overpass was a building front. i wondered how planners had gotten away with that one. it literally blocks the sign on the building front. OREGON PORTLAND CEMENT CO. seriously. now the area is a sketchy industrial area.

and all the cool staircases that lead off the bridges for people on foot. i'd never seen them before.
