Summer, Dear, Please Don't Leave... What Can I Do to Make You Stay?

Long time, no write, LJ. Sorry 'bout that. Been busy, I guess.

I'm so beyond not ready for classes to start. Right now I kind of want to spend the rest of my life watching Bones and reading good books (currently Michael Chabon's Mysteries of Pittsburgh--the more I read of his stuff, the more I idolize him, there's a certain effortless, nonchalant perfection to his prose that I would kill to possess). Of course, once I get back in the swing of things, it won't be any big thing, but for the moment, I'm enjoying my little bit of down time.

Of course, as has already been announced on Facebook, Latin wasn't actually my only task this summer. I was also watching Italian movies and finally, FINALLY, writing a novel. I can't promise it's any good. It might be shit. But I've done it, at long last. From the time I was a little, little kid, we're talking four or five years old, this has been the only thing I've really wanted to do. Don't get me wrong, I want to teach. But writing has always been and always will be my greatest passion, and I'm just so thrilled that I somehow manifested the stamina to produce a manuscript of any length (320 pages, to be precise). I printed it (the fucker cost me $24), and it's now sitting in a binder on the floor, to be avoided for a few weeks before massive, massive editing occurs. I'm also tossing titles around. The working title is A Boy, His Girl, and the Whole World, but I'm not sure I'm going to stick with that. Anyway, yay for being done and for making a childhood dream come true. :)

Let's see. I puppy-sat for a week, and Remy is a pretty intense, energetic pup, so that was fun but tiring. I still want a dog of my own, though, no worries. Some day. And then I got to go to Boston and check out Cynshen's cool new pad and go to a Sox game and visit my old stomping ground and eat some Sunset Cantina nachos (seriously, I dream of those things from time to time) and hang out with Cynshen, of course. And she came to the Have for a few days, and I'm pretty sure she had a good time. I definitely did. She got to see the grad student bar I'm always blabbing about, at any rate.

My friends are slowly but surely trickling back into town. I've had a few good chill nights with different people, which has been fun. I'm not up to huge social scenes yet, hence avoiding the hipster-themed costume party tonight, but I'll get back to that eventually. I also haven't really met any of the first-years yet, and I'm curious to see if that will change, or if they'll just be in their own little world. I'll definitely meet the two new Italian department peeps soon, though. Well, I've already met them both, but I'll get to know them better now.

My Complete Series Blu-ray edition of Lost arrived yesterday, and it's amazing. The most impressive DVD packaging I've ever seen. Hidden compartments, lots of extras, looks the base of a pyramid. Well worth the money, in my opinion.

Meeting with my department head on Monday to discuss my schedule. If he lets me take the courses I want, and I think/hope he will, my schedule will be Monday nights 7-8:50 pm, Tuesday 1:30-3:20 pm, 3:30-5:20 pm, Thursday 9:20-11:10 am, and I'm definitely happy with that. The courses could go either way. Have to see what happens the first few weeks of class before passing judgment.

Tomorrow night = watching the Emmy awards at Shari's. You know I love a good awards show, so I'm definitely looking forward to that.

And I think that's just about it. My small cheese pizza, mozzarella sticks, and root beer should be here any minute, anyway, so this is as good a time as any to sign off. Till next time, friends.
