All You Need is Love, Alcohol, Italian Cinema, British Politicians, and Latkes

Basically, it's mid-term paper flurry, and I need a break. A piccola pausa, they say in Italian. So I'm on here to share with you the more exciting elements of the upcoming week, rather than to continuously lament the existence of essays. First on the agenda is today's Dean's Holiday Reception, which will be pretty chill and free food and drink. Then tonight may or may not involve a grad student bar run, depending on how far along I get on this paper. Tomorrow, the Yale Film Society is doing a special showing of Fellini's 8 1/2, which is supposedly one of the greatest films of all time, Italian or otherwise (and one that I probably should have already seen as an Italian Ph.D. student, but hey I'm getting to it now, right?), and then an advance screening of Nine, which is based on a Broadway musical based on 8 1/2 and which looks like it will be solid entertainment, especially since it's all for free! Thursday, I'm going with Eva to see Tony Blair give a talk, mainly because it's Tony Blair. And then the Italian department is having its holiday party at the house of one of my professors, so I'll be going to that, as well. Friday is being left as a total workaholic day. And Saturday is Shari's Hanukkah party, which promises to be pretty fun, and there will be latkes, so I will be more-than-content.

As you can probably tell, I'm going to sap every ounce of fun out of these things that I possibly can, just to make the paper-writing process a little less painful. Although there is a slight improvement on that front in general, as we got another paper extension today. I'm still going to work really hard to have everything done by the 19th or 20th, just to avoid writing papers for the entire first half of my break, but if that's not possible, it's not possible, and that's okay. Which is a huge weight off my shoulders.

At any rate, all work and no play make Taylor a dull boy, so it's a good thing I have LJ and a variety of fun activities to keep me not-so-dull. Hope you're all enjoying the first wave of the holiday season, and good luck with all of your own end-of-term madness!
