This has probably been my favorite list to compile. I love movies and it was so hard to pick ten that really stood out to me this decade. So here goes, my ten favorites and some honorable mentions. :)
Honorable Mentions:
10. Bend it Like Beckham (2003)
I watched this back when I was obsessed with soccer. Needless to say, I did not understand it at all but I loved everything about it. As I've grown to know the complexities of the film from multiple viewings over the years I can only say that enjoy it more and more each time. Awesome soundtrack too. Plus, Johnathan Rhys Myers is HOTTT.
9. Mean Girls (2004)
Another movie where I was young (11) at the time of the first viewing, and didn't fully understand all the jokes. Well I understand them all now, and I'm still thoroughly entertained every time I watch. This is one of the first movies I've seen where I can remember not getting tired of it after more than three viewings. I knew what was coming but I love to say my favorite lines as I laugh hysterically. My brothers even love Mean Girls which is saying quite a lot!
8. The Dark Knight (2008)
Ah, the movie event of a lifetime. i feel that Heath Ledger's unfortunate death worked in the movie favor when it comes to publicity, but nevertheless it's amazing and deserves its awards. Ledger had the role of a lifetime and murdered anyone else who ever played the joker with his first crack of the words "Why so serious?". I haven't met one person who dislikes this movie. It may be three hours, but every second is worth it. Amazing film.
7. Big Fish (2003)
Tim Burton was definitely my favorite director this decade and Big Fish was a huge part of his success these past few years, I think. It was a whimsical film, filled with fantastic images and a myriad of my favorite actors and actresses (e.g. Ewan McGregor and Helena Bonham Carter). Definitely worth a watch. And you'll be in tears at the end.
6. National Treasure (2004)
This might be unexpected but not to me. I've loved this movie and at one point in sixth grade I think it was probably my favorite movie. It gave me an interest in history and Justin Bartha is spectacularly hilarious throughout.
5. Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street (2007)
I remember anticipating this movie for the entirety of 8th grade. I remember crying when I found out it was R. I remember sneaking it at a friend's house two years ago and nearly dying it was so good. C'mon Tim Burton directs a musical starring Johnny Depp, HBC, Alan Rickman, and Jamie Campbell Bower among others. It was sickly good.
4. Slumdog Millionaire (2008)
This one wins the tears award for making me cry harder than I thought I would. So uplifting and heartfelt, with an excellent soundtrack. Dev Patel is brilliant and gorgeous. I love this movie because it makes me believe in true love. And it has pure, raw entertainment quality. Love, love, love it.
3. Love Actually (2003)
One of the best romantic comedies ever made. Wait, no. THE best romantic comedy ever. Hugh Grant steals my heart in this, but Bill Nighy is definitely the best. I also enjoy Colin Firth, Laura Linney, Liam Neeson, and Emma Thompson. All excellent. Rather than focus on one story of love, we are given a view of many different stories. We are shown the ups and down, the pains and joys, and how love is not always romantic. It's just, love actually. And it is all around, in every form possible.
2. Inglourious Basterds (2009)
Best fucking movie I have seen all year. I just watched it for the first time last week at my friend's, but I can't stop watching it now. So, so, so great. Brad Pitt has never been my favorite, but I adore him after this. And BJ Novak stole the show, even though he barely did anything. The quality was excellent, and even pointless scenes had me laughing. I was in tears at the end. Tarantino's rewrite of history is one big fat EPIC WIN.
1. Moulin Rouge! (2001)
I can't even begin to describe this movie. I've seen it so many times and my love has never waned. At the very beginning I thought it was going to be a big, trippy, mess, but not at all. It was wonderful. It was spectacular. Nicole and Ewan just stole the entire movie. Their chemistry, their voices, their overall performances. It all made me melt. Not only is it the best movie of the decade, but probably the best of all time. Truly spectacular.
So this is my last post of 2009. I'm off to a party! I really think it's been a great year. I loved this year almost as much as 2007.
In 2010 I need to try not to get so caught up in time. I need to just live and stop being so worried about it, but I need to treat time like a gift. Is that making sense?
I really want to thank EVERYONE on here because ALL of you helped make my year AMAZING! LOVE YOU and good luck in 2010!
