Prompt: Who do you care about the most?
“Now Ms. Edith, you’ve been very good. You can come to dinner with the rest of the family. Daddy and mommy and my William will all be there dressed in their finest; a party for all of us. Whe-“
“Dru, why’re ye not dressed yet?”
I turn away from where Ms. Edith sits on the shelf to find William and Daddy in the doorway. “Ms. Edith needs to get ready first.”
“Yer dolls aren’t comin’ out with us, Dru. Get dressed.”
Daddy leaves and a small whimper comes from somewhere and I’m not certain if it’s me. William is in front of me, his arms around me and I curl my fingers at the lapels of his jacket.
“Now Drusilla, Let’s find you a pretty dress.” He whispers quietly into my hair, smoothing it back from my face. He kisses my forehead and then moves to the chest full of dresses pulling out one and then another. “How about the blue? It looks perfect on you.”
I shake my head. “Don’t want to go to a party anymore. Tick, tick slit the throat, never enough for us all.”
“Oh I’ll hear none of that.” William gathers the silk of the blue dress and lifts it up. “Arms up, love.” I concede and he lets the dress fall down over my corset and slip. He plants a kiss to my cheek before moving to my back to work at the laces.
“Ms. Edith was ready for a party. Pity she has to stay, she’s been such a good girl.” I feel the laces tighten at my back as I look to where the doll sits on the shelf. “Don’t want daddy to be cross with me.”
“He won’t be.” William’s voice is soothingly soft and calm. “We’re going to have a smashing time. We’ll dance and feast.”
I’m instantly distracted from Ms. Edith. He always knows how to make me feel better. “You’ll dance with me?”
“As much as you want, love.”
He’s in front of me again, pulling some of my hair up and putting it in place with hairpins. “Around and around we’ll go and daddy will be pleased with us.”
“Do you really care whether he’s pleased or not?” William asks me and I can smell the jealousy coming off of him.
I laugh, a wicked, maniacal sound and shake my head to appease him. I’ve always cared about my family’s happiness and well-being. It’s something that cannot be changed. To please William, I can say this though. “Are you happy, my William?”
“Completely.” He places a hand to each side of my face and leans in to place a soft kiss to my lips. I am pleased.
The End
