Today began at 7AM when I had to get ready and take the New Jersey Transit into the city with Jen. The other days in the BJ office, to be honest, had been pretty slow for us and with Jen expecting her project to take all day I had a feeling my time there was going to be excruciating. Around 10 or 11AM I decided to leave the office for an adventure.
Trekking the New York City streets alone was not as intimidating as you would think. I had a phone conversation with Liz in front of Parsons School of Design, then I headed over to Mood fabric store (both of Project Runway fame). I took pictures at both places, and visited the landmarks of the Fashion District, needle and sewing man statue. When I got back into the office, Jen and I got some lunch then I was handed a one of a kind Betsey dress and was told, "sew this." There was ribbon and bow makings attached to it and I took a hour and half to perfectly hand sew a sash and bow around the waist of the garment. I will point it out on the runway!
After that, there was a lot of waiting around on my part. I felt a little awkward around the other interns, and I felt weird asking what there was to do. I wish I was more assertive in that regard. For dinner we ordered from Zen Palate, a vegan restaurant. I got a seaweed salad and avocado sandwich. Around 9PM there was an intern meeting that I was curious to sit in on. The head designers berated the little interns so they wouldn't fuck up anything sent down the runway. About 15 minutes in, Jen pulled me by the arm out of the room, and says to me, "you're going to take a cab, pick up Betsey's dinner and bring it to her apartment." I was like r u srs?! As soon as I could bat an eyelash, I had a company credit card in my pocket and I was in a New York City cab with a piece of paper with Betsey Johnson's home address on it. I showed the cabbie the address and I am whisked away, and the stores and buildings get swankier and more upscale as we drive along. To one side of me is Dior and Dolce, to the other side is Armani and Viutton. I am brought to the restaurant, (I'll look at the paper with it on it and insert the name here tomorrow), and it is so small and posh looking. I'm all, "I'm here to pick up food for Betsey" and they're like OH YES, right away, as the cab meter is running, but it doesn't matter because I have the company card.
I am handed the food and I show the cab driver the next address. As we get into the ritzy residential New York City, there are signs that ban honking your horn and that you will be fined if you do. We pull up to an apartment building and the doorman with white gloves opens my car door and takes my bags, like I live there. I stop him before he starts kissing my ass or whatever those well trained servants are supposed to do and let him know I just need to drop off Betsey's food. I should have went in and saw the inside. Doorman asks me my name with a smile, and tells me his name is Ray. He opens my car door for me again and shuts it. Such service.
I get driven back to the office and tip the cabbie well.
I'll write more about my night, and there is not much more but I am super tired (we got back here at about 2AM) and I have to wake up at 7AM again - TOMORROW IS SHOW DAY.
