I love this. Just. The angst and the little hint of something before. It's all so perfect.

I totally got choked up at this line: Three tags on one chain, a match to the three around his own neck. They never stopped wearing them. Long after Lee quit the military, and long before the settlement here on Earth. Fumbling around in a new world for purpose, for belonging, the weight of the tags kept them anchored in both past and present. Each wearing their own tags, and splitting hers between them. A constant clanking reminder of what and who they lost to get here.

I was kind of going for maximum angst with the tags bit, but I got an image in my head of Anders adding Kara's tags to his own, and then I wanted that to be something that they shared...and behold: teh schmoopy, achey aaaaaangst.

Just so you know, that last section is just about the perfectest bit of Lee/Sam ever. I'm in awe of how you can communicate all the shit I would like to in a fic but never can, not even in the long ramble of words I produce. I love the way this is put together, with the two moments that represent so much about their interactions and then the coda. The writing itself is just lovely, restrained but evocative.

I just gotta say, though, this bit: "You know she still smelled like you. Woke me up, dragged me down to the river, said our vows and the whole time all I could smell was you." I am absolutely torn by feeling it like a gut punch to Sam (as much of a gut punch as their marriage was to Lee, as visercal and apparent on his face) and finding this whole scene unbearably hot, in a very angsty way. And I don't usually like angsty hot. I blame you. Entirely. ;)

Seriously, though, you have no idea how much this feedback means to me coming from YOU. You are one of my all-time writing heroes, and gahhhh. I'm all choked up and inarticulate now.

Funny enough, the coda almost had a coda of it's own where it descended into full on domestic schmoop with more detail about Sam and Lee raising Kara's kid together...so I'm really glad I managed to pull of "restrained but evocative" instead. Maybe there's a future drabble in that somewhere...

That two-part effect (from Sam's reaction to smelling Lee on Kara) was exactly what I was going for, so uber-yay! I wanted it to be painful and conflicted and visceral. A complementary experience/reaction to Lee's-puke-face about the impromptu wedding. But also one that implies that Sam knows Lee's smell himself well enough to recognize it on her. And angsty-hot is where my muse lives, so I'm really not going to
