in just under the wire...the Prompts List!

Jan 20, 2008 23:00

It's time to get this slashathon officially underway!

Look for discussion posts--of both the thinky meta and unrepentant squeeing sort--over the next couple of weeks, but for now, the important thing is…

GET PROMPTED
(January 20 - February 9)

[See the guidelines post for a full explanation of the process and timetable for recieving prompts, writing stories, and posting them.]

Make a comment in this post requesting one or two of the available numbers in the master list below. I'll reply to your comment as soon as possible, letting you know what prompt(s) you received, filling in the master list with usernames/prompts as I go.

The Kinds of Prompts You'll See

--> Stock Images
--> BSG Places and Things
--> Lyrics (with links to a download of the song)
--> 3 Words
--> Song Titles (all classic rock hits; there's no expectation that you'll use the song itself as inspiration, just the title)

So, What Do We Expect You to Do with This Randomness?

The purpose if this comm and challenge is to generate new and interesting BSG slash. Use the prompts toward that end, as inspiration, a nudge in a productive direction.

How close to the prompt do you need to be? Obviously, you don't want someone reading your fic and scratching their head, saying, "I don't know how they got here from there." At the same time, we don't expect the entire story to slavishly revolve around the prompt.

The distinction still fuzzy? Perhaps a couple of humorous illustrations...

If, for example, you recieve Lyrics, your story might be inspired by them or perhaps by the song as a whole, but you don't have to quote the lyrics in the story. If the prompt was Tiffany's "I think we're alone now" (BTW, I swear by the lords of Kobol it's not!), you wouldn't need to write a story where Hot Dog turns to Tyrol in a storage closet and says, "Uh, Chief, I think we're alone now," before he proceeds to kiss him within an inch of his life. Having them be alone, in whatever way you conceive of that concept, will do just fine. Of course, the lyrics super_kc chose aren't anything even remotely as lame as early nineties bubblegum pop, so you might find yourself with an itch to quote them in the story in some fashion--and that's cool, too.

Another example: 3 Words prompts don't need to be entirely focused on any or all of those words. You want to slip the concepts in their somewhere-all 3 of them, hopefully-but they don't have to overwhelm the story. If, say, your prompt is "rock, heat, toes," you don't have to write a story about Baltar frakking Gaeta up against a rock in the scorching sun, with toe-sucking as foreplay. Nothing says you can't, of course. :) But you could also write about Gaeta being Baltar's emotional rock or Baltar feeling the heat of his gaze. There's room for liberal interpretation.

Basically, use these words, concepts, images, lyrics, and song titles as helpful suggestions for your fic-writing muse. Be creative. Have fun. The stories aren't due until early March, so you've got time to plan...or to procrastinate, as the case may be. ;)
