As you all may remember, the reopening of bsg_awards for nomms is in 4 days ((6th October)). Bearing that in mind, I have been taking suggestions under consideration and wanted to get some general feedback

I went ahead and copied and pasted your categories below and made little notes. I know, so obnoxious. lol. But I have some icontest communities as well and I love feedback, so you might appreciate this. :)
I have an awards community and sadly, I have found that people are confused by the nifty names I have given each category. feedback_awards in case you want to look at my categories. I thought they were very simple. I'm not sure what to do about this, because I think the categories need to have names.
I think allowing promo pictures in all the categories is good. Lot's of people make icons from promo pictures. Especially at the beginning of a season.
Colonial Day - Best overall icon. One of those icons that totally knocks you for six. This one is good
Flesh and Bone - Must include actors outside their BSG roles on screen only. May include promo shoots [not including episode promos for BSG, because technically they're just caps of the episode], other roles, photo shoots, award show photos, etc. This category can include multiple cast members. All other categories may only have character icons. I would definitely make this less confusing and leave only the first sentence and maybe say "nothing BSG related". I would even exclude BSG promo pics and go ahead and allow them in all the other icons.
Lay Down Your Burdens - Icon must display some sort of emotion, whether through the text, cropping, colouring, or character expression. Make this simple as well. Just say Emotional Icons. I think people will interpret this in many ways which is good
Valley Of Darkness - Textless Icons. No text, except for allowance of Xs and -s. Tiny text is not allowed. This one looks good to me. What is -s?
Act Of Contrition - Best use of text. May not only have Xs .s or -s and must include further textual characters. I think the second sentence is a little confusing. I would leave it out. You could say, "may be a quote or one word. Text must be readable". That would tell people that it can't just be an "x".
The Captain's Hand - Relationship icons. The category for best couple/ship icons Do you want this to be only love relationships or can it be friendships, comrades, work mates, enemies, etc. It would open up the category to more icons.
33 - Icons with three or more characters.
Litmus - Best use of colour. Can not be mainly black and white. I like this category, but if you were to drop it I would add a "Most Creative category".
Black Market - Icons that are black and white or mainly black and white. May have a splash of colour. Good
Final Cut - Best perspective using cropping and/or framing. Both can look good if used to give the right perspective. For example, a cap you have seen used multiple times can look amazing and breathtaking again, simply by a change of angle. Again, I would make this simple. "Best cropping" period. Most icon makers don't need an explanation for this.
Kobols Last Gleaming - Funny icons, text-wise or expression-wise. Can include profanity. Good
Epiphanies - Most original icon. May be an original use of cropping, or a strange and beautiful effect. Good
Special Category - Each week there will be a mod chosen special category. Details will be given as it is announced. I like your idea of having the special category good for more than one session
